Dear Parents/Guardians,
My classroom objectives:
Schoolwork vs. homework: School is for learning; home is for practicing. That should be our mantra. If your child comes home saying that they need you to teach them how to do something, then we have a problem. If this becomes a pattern, let me know as soon as soon as possible. I would never ask you to do my job for me. This is something we can fix. Fwiw, I don't assign homework per se (well, very rarely), I assign classwork. If students are unable to finish their classwork during the school day, then that work becomes 'homework.' *If homework is taking more than 1 hour to complete, please contact me. I really encourage that your child does not do more than 1 hour of homework each night- this includes reading and math facts. If you want them to do more than 1 hour, that is up to you. For myself, if they do an hour of work, but still are not done- please just write me a quick note telling me they worked for an hour. That is good enough for me! My goal is for them to build good habits, not make them suffer at home. Hopefully, they are getting most of their work done at school so that this isn't a problem. Habits/Daily routine: Your child should read at least 20 minutes a day- 100 minutes per week. The more this reading can be done out loud, the better (they can read to a sibling, to you, or themselves.) If they read to you, discuss what they are reading occasionally. Your child needs to know their multiplication/division facts up to 12 x 12. They don't have to learn it all in one week however. My advice is to have them practice one or two numbers each week that they struggle with. (For example, one week they work on their 7's, the next week their 8's.) We take a multiplication test almost every week in class. The results from that test shows the kids their 'weaknesses.' These are the numbers they need to practice. Grading: Proficiency Based Grading 4= Above standard 3= Meets standard 2= Approaching standard 1= Does not meet standard
Classroom: I want my students to feel that my classroom is a safe haven for their emotional and physical well being. If you learn that your child does not feel this way, please contact me immediately so we can fix the problem. I do not say this to give it lip service! I am the parent of two girls- 11 and 14. There are times when they come home from school or camp crying, or mentioning a problematic situation that has happened to them. Getting to the reality of what occurred, why it happened, etc. can be a trial. Ultimately, as a parent, I hope for the problem to stop. As your child's teacher, I want you to contact me sooner rather than later. If I don't know what is happening, I can't take steps to try and fix the problem. PLEASE let us communicate. If a student in my class isn't feeling comfortable, whether it is due to me, a student(s), or another teacher, let me know. I am on YOUR side. We are in this together! ___________________________________________________________________ *Cell Phones may be at school if kept in a backpack and turned off. If you need to contact your child during school hours please contact the office. *Your student is expected to follow all class, school, and district rules and procedures outlined here and in the student planner. *Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Kindest regards, John Glime [email protected]

Hi parents,
If you happen to be reading this before school has started, know that I am in the process of updating the website for the new school year. The Bloomz code should work for the new year. I look forward to meeting all of you. If you have specific questions please email me, and I will respond as soon as I am able. I hope you have had a safe and healthy summer! -John Hi parents,
I hope you made it through the week without too many problems. I will be sending home the 2nd quarter report card on Monday. As a parent and teacher, it is interesting to observe my own bias in looking at report cards. When my kids bring home their report cards I immediately start comparing their grades to the previous quarters. Did they go up? Did they go down? If they went down, I wondered what happened. I believe this is probably a normal reaction for parents. We look at our kids' report cards and want to know if they are doing well. We want to know if they are getting better or getting worse, etc. The teacher part of me has a different view. Here are some of my thoughts that I would like you to keep in mind as you look at your child's report card:
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you. -John Hi parents/guardians,
As we are starting our 3rd week of school I just wanted to check in with you. The last two weeks have been a feeling-out period regarding 5th-grade processes and expectations. How is your child responding? If there are any questions, clarifications, or problems please let me know. This week I am sending home a reading calendar for the month of September. I would encourage your child to use it to keep track of their reading minutes for the month. If you have a different system, that works too. My request is that your child returns the reading calendar (or other) to me at the end of the month with a reading minute total and your signature. The 5th-grade expectation is a minimum of 400 minutes per month (20 minutes per night), with as many of those minutes as possible being read out loud. More than 400 minutes per month is allowed. 🙂 This is also the time of the year where multiplication fact mastery starts to have a noticeable difference in math success. Having this foundation frees up your child's mind to focus on the daily lessons. Please encourage this practice. I recommend 10 minutes a night. There is also an app that students have enjoyed in the past (Pet Bingo) that may help your child if they have access to a cell phone or tablet. New school year habits are hard to engrain. The sooner your child can find their routine, the easier the school year tends to go. Let me know if you feel like I need to modify my expectations for your child. I have really enjoyed getting to know your children the last two weeks. They are kind, caring, and polite! I really appreciate them. Thank you, John Dear Parents/Guardians,

I wanted to give you an idea of what to expect next week in 5th grade: - I will send home end-of-the-year testing results. I will not be sending home report cards- they will be mailed to your home. - Any missing work needs to be turned in by the end of the day Thursday. - Computers and books will be turned in on Tuesday. Please have your child look for any school books at home. - Tuesday is field day here at Driggs. The 5th grade will be on the field from 2-3 pm. - Wednesday the 5th grade will be having an end-of-the-year party from 10:30- noon. - Projects and classwork next week will not be used for 4th quarter grades. - Thursday is a distance learning day, however, the kids will have already turned in their computers. There will be a student parade from 9- 10 am where the teachers will be sitting in front of the school. Your family is welcome to drive by and be cheered on! At 10:30, my class will be having a short awards assembly on the grass in front of the school. I sent a note home with your child yesterday about this. The awards being given will be honor roll (grades), the Presidential Academic Award (all 4's on their EOY testing), Presidential Silver Award (exceptional growth this past year), and safety patrol participation awards. I will not be giving any assignments on this day. I hope you will be able to enjoy this Memorial Day weekend. Thank you, John |
