Hi Parents,
I REALLY hope you are using this website to communicate with me. My expectation is for your child to use this website every day. I don't want to make this post too long. I also don't want to bug you with emails. So here are some of my thoughts after the first week of this new form of education: 1) I need to meet with your child at least 1 time per week in a video conference setting (using Google Meet.) 2) Your child must read the Daily Student Message every day before they start their schoolwork for the day. 3) Your child should build a workable daily habit of doing their school work each school day. When they don't, they fall behind and many kids who fall behind grow frustrated and overwhelmed. (This is similar to how college students fail their Freshman year- not enough structure.) 4) 2/3 of the class is doing great! 1/3 is behind. Please utilize this weekend to catch up if needed. It is the first week and we are all learning, so I understand. However, I am required to give grades and still be a teacher. Part of that is making sure that your child and I are on the same page and that they are learning. 5) Go through this checklist with your child from this 1st week: Math assignments, Math test, 5 Readworks reading passages with answers, writing assignment posted to Utah Compose, 15 science notes from 3 videos. (That is what I am grading this 1st week.) I will wait until Monday to put those scores into the computer.) My Google Meet hours are 9-11 and 1-3 each school day. The kids can come and go from this virtual classroom as much as they need throughout the day. I am able to see their computer screen and help them with any problem they are having- computer, academic, emotional, etc. I am also available for scheduling Google Meet meetings in the evenings if needed. Please share with me if you are having frustrations, confusions, or questions. I am on your side. We are in this together. If I don't receive feedback I don't know how to help. Thank you, John

Good morning.
Today I have opened a Google Meet- face to face teleconferencing. Have your child go to Google Classroom to click on the link to join. Also, please have your child read the Student Daily Message on this website every school day morning. This will be the place where I can communicate with them. Thank you. Hi everyone. My hope is that you will take the next few days off of school and try to enjoy a spring break. With that said, have Day 1 completed. That way we can find out if you are having any problems. Specifically, I am noticing that there are a few of you who have not posted a video in Flipgrid. Please do this so that I know you are able to login and understand how the website works.
Thank you. When you look at the assignments for your kids in the "5 Day Block" section you will see that there is a Day 1, Day 2, etc. Day 2 will be Tuesday.
Hi parents,
Today was going to be challenging enough, but our earthquake closure has taken this mess of a process to another level. About ten of you picked up computers, materials, and instructions. Two thirds of you did not. School will be open tomorrow and you will be able to come to school and pick up computers, etc. with the same schedule. Pick up at my room is 9-1 pm unless you have made other arrangements. Pacing. There are many variables that are going to come into play during these first two weeks that will be out of my control. My goal is for you to complete each day's assignment each day. In practice, you may run into technical difficulties or life difficulties that make this unreachable. Further, as we planned for each day's lessons we envisioned work taking approximately 2 hours for the 'average' student. We may have misjudged significantly. As the days go by, we will try to adjust our expectations. I will try to give grades based on 5 day blocks. Try to have all "must do" activities completed by the 5th day. For this to work on my end, I need to make sure every child can log in to every website. This won't be a problem for some websites that we have used a lot this year, but it could be a big challenge for many of the new websites and programs that we will be trying for the first time. What you see from the student's perspective as they login is not necessarily what I see when I am setting things up from the teacher's perspective. If kids were in my classroom I could quickly problem shoot. Being away from you, I need to test things remotely on a different computer. Please have patience. I am going to try to really work on the Online Education section of this website to share information on the main programs/websites that we will be using. This is a work in progress. Thank you and take care, John |
