Hi parents/guardians,
As we are starting our 3rd week of school I just wanted to check in with you. The last two weeks have been a feeling-out period regarding 5th-grade processes and expectations. How is your child responding? If there are any questions, clarifications, or problems please let me know. This week I am sending home a reading calendar for the month of September. I would encourage your child to use it to keep track of their reading minutes for the month. If you have a different system, that works too. My request is that your child returns the reading calendar (or other) to me at the end of the month with a reading minute total and your signature. The 5th-grade expectation is a minimum of 400 minutes per month (20 minutes per night), with as many of those minutes as possible being read out loud. More than 400 minutes per month is allowed. 🙂 This is also the time of the year where multiplication fact mastery starts to have a noticeable difference in math success. Having this foundation frees up your child's mind to focus on the daily lessons. Please encourage this practice. I recommend 10 minutes a night. There is also an app that students have enjoyed in the past (Pet Bingo) that may help your child if they have access to a cell phone or tablet. New school year habits are hard to engrain. The sooner your child can find their routine, the easier the school year tends to go. Let me know if you feel like I need to modify my expectations for your child. I have really enjoyed getting to know your children the last two weeks. They are kind, caring, and polite! I really appreciate them. Thank you, John
